Portrait Dolls

The Portrait Doll Series explores the sculptural medium of the doll.  The artist first constructed a “self-portrait” doll, featured in Playing with Myself.  The doll’s face was painted in oil to more closely resemble her own face.  She also constructed a series of other dolls that are painted to resemble subjects in specific oil portraits by the masters, for example Thomas Gainsborough's "Blue Boy," or Diego Velázquez's "Infanta Margarita."  The dolls and costumes are handmade and hand sewn, and dressed in the manner of these specific old masters' paintings, but again, portray contemporary subjects.  The final artworks are saturated color photographs of these dolls in various poses, and printed in medium and large formats.
