Secrets

The Secrets Series, begun in 2003, is a set of filmic portraits created based on secrets received by the artist anonymously via e-mail from all over the country.  The subjects were found by her posting a call for subjects on sites all over the internet, stating, "I believe many of us walk around our entire lives with a secret we will never tell anyone, but that nevertheless defines us. I want to do an anonymous portrait of you, based on your secret. Please write me back at seekingsecrets@yahoo.com and tell me your secret, as well as as much or little information about yourself as you wish to reveal."

The artist never met the subjects, but corresponded strictly by e-mail.  After receiving a myriad of replies from across the country (and many fascinating secrets), she made a selection of them and, in a blind collaboration, set the words of the respondents as subtitles to her own moving images.

One version of this piece with twelve of the secrets, “I wish to remain anonymous,” is shown as a short film.  The artist also printed single frames of these videos as a separate, photographic body of work.

In 2006, the artist installed the "Secrets" in the cafe of the San Jose Museum in conjunction with the ISEA/Zero One Festival.  She embedded tiny LCD monitors playing loops of the subtitled "Secrets" videos in hidden areas of the cafe -- in the cafe's tables, hidden underneath the salt and pepper shakers, and in the cafe's drink bar, beneath the coasters.  Viewers would discover the secrets upon dining or drinking at the cafe.  A similar installation was exhibited in 2008 for the Garage Biennale’s “Girls On Film” exhibition in San Francisco.
